Obituary of Gladys Ekdahl

EKDAHKL Mrs. Gladys Eleanor – (July 2, 1912 – October 3, 2008)
Our Mother departed from this world on October 3, 2008 with family members by her side. Mom will be missed by her three daughters and one son and their families: Donna (Ted) Chymycz, Wabamun, AB, Blanche (Scott Manery) and Lance (Magdalena), Nicolas and Colby; Fern (Larry) Bang, Cabri, SK, Kevin (Lori), Casey and Kayden, Melinda Channon, Nolan and Colton, Sheldon (Brandy), Tyler and Tristan; Alice (Swen) Garvik, Saskatoon, SK, Andreas and Karena (Dallas Ewart); Carl (Bonnie) Ekdahl, Regina, SK, Bradley and Allison. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Alfred, and her great grandson, Jayce Bang. Mom was born to Norwegian immigrant parents, Karoline and Iver Bell at Dubuc, SK. She was baptized and confirmed in the church at Dubuc. She took all of her schooling in Dubuc and then attended Normal School in Regina in 1930 – 31. Mom taught at Nybo School in the Hallonquist area from 1932 – 34 and at Round Lake School in the Dubuc area from 1934 – 36. The next five years were spent in Vancouver where she worked as a children’s supervisor. On June 30th, 1941, Mom and Dad were wed at Macklin, SK. In 1942, they began farming in the Hallonquist area. Our family moved five miles east of the farm in 1953 to occupy the farmstead of the late Elizabeth and Sam Butler in the Dendron area. Mom was known for her sewing ability. She was a member of the Spring Valley Ladies Aid in the Hallonquist area where she served as secretary for a while and became a lifetime member. She served on the Dendron School Board. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Hallonquist and of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Swift Current, as well as the Pioneer Co-operative Association and the New Democratic Party. Our parents moved from the Hodgeville area in June, 1970 to Swift Current. Mom had three residences in the past 38 years, the last one being the Bentley. She remained independent almost to the end of her life. The Funeral Service was held on October 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Amber Hoffman officiating and Lexie Culham presiding at the piano. The private family interment was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home.
