CRAMPTON – Melvin Robert – born in Abbey, SK on December 29, 1926 to Ivy & William Crampton. He attended LegottSchool in the Abbey District until he was 16. He lived on the farm and worked driving horse and wagon. He joined the Army at the age of 18 and was stationed at Suffield where he was subjected to gas testing several times. He was discharged from the army when the war ended in October 1945. He met Margaret Carleton on the train on his way to Regina. Having lived in Ashley Park he would pass Margaret’s home often and so they started dating. They were later married on September 20, 1947. Mel worked at the horse plant with his brother Bill for a short time. Then Mel and his brother-in-law George decided to try upholstering for a short time. After that he went on to work for the CPR for 8 years. During this period they had two daughters; Linda, born February 1952 and Twyla born November 1954. He then moved on to work at Eaton’s in Swift Current were he remained for 35 years. They sold their home on Bothwell Drive and moved to the new Pioneer Manor as one of the first residents and have lived there for 10 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his patio of flowers and lettuce and his small garden across the lane. He had a passion for sports, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, traveling, bus trips, dancing and playing cards. He was also very passionate about his grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He also drove school bus and the ability bus. They traveled to many places like England, Europe, Hawaiian Islands and Alaska. Melvin is survived by: his loving wife Margaret; daughter Linda (Vic) – children, Michael, Ryan (Amber), granddaughters Brooklyn and Marisol; daughter Twyla – children, Jason, Kevin and Brooklyn; sister Mary Goddard of Kindersley and brother John of Saskatoon. Melvin was predeceased by his parents, William and Ivy; brothers Allan in 1964, Bill in 2002 and sister Ruth in 1991. A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from MountCalvaryLutheranChurch with Pastor Brad Julien officiating. The organist was Murray Eichorst and a eulogy was read by son-in-law Vic Schapansky. The ushers were: Ella Kaminski, Verna Eichorst and Richard & Donna Reese. The honorary pallbearers were: Gordon & Gloria Armstrong, Harold & Jean Satter, Jack & Lois Davidson and Marge Miller. The interment took place at Mount PleasantBurialPark – Veteran’s Section. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to MountCalvaryLutheranChurch in memory of Melvin Crampton.
