SOMMERFELD – Gordon Henry, age 81 of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully with family by his side, on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. Gordon received care at the Cypress Regional Hospital before his passing and during those difficult days, there was often evidence of Gordon’s hallmark sense of humour and love for his family. He also conveyed his appreciation for the staff at the hospital and the family would like to echo this sentiment and thank the caring nurses, physicians and other staff at the Cypress Regional Hospital. Gordon, the youngest of five children, was born to Peter Sommerfeld and Mary Marquard Sommerfeld on January 27, 1934. His school years were spent in Wymark, Saskatchewan, where he pursued his interests in baseball and hockey. On November 30, 1957, Gordon married Anne; they were married for 58 years. The early years of their marriage were spent in Wymark, where Gordon farmed while also working in Swift Current. Their three children were born during those years; Grant in 1960, Darla in 1963, and Steven in 1966. In 1971, Gordon and Anne left farming behind and moved to Swift Current. Gordon worked at Canada Post, first in Swift Current, and later in Moose Jaw, Yorkton, and in Regina as the Regional Manager for the province. In 1990 Gordon returned to Swift Current as Postmaster before retiring in 1993. Gordon spent countless hours during those years encouraging his children in their academic pursuits and coaching and cheering at hockey, baseball, swimming and more. He loved the game of golf and played avidly until 2003. After Gordon retired from Canada Post in 1993 he spent several years managing the golf course at Lake Pelletier, staying close to the game he enjoyed. Gordon spent countless hours playing cards with his brothers, scrabble with his grandchildren and was an avid reader consuming a book a week. Gordon attended the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, and he enjoyed the ministry of the church in all of the cities where he lived. Gordon appreciated his visits with Pastor Froese and Pastor Regier while in the hospital. Gordon is survived by, and will be deeply missed by: his wife Anne; from Calgary, Alberta, his son Grant and his wife Tina; from Elkford, B.C., his daughter Darla and her husband Marlon Regier and their children Devin, Mitchell, Courtney and Alana; from Saskatoon, SK, his son Steve and his wife Kim and their son Cody; his brother Donald Sommerfeld and his wife Marie; and his brother-in-law Leonard Dyck.
