Al is survived by his wife of 70 years, Val Morstad, children Joan (Gerald) Ailsby, Connie (Glen) Rittinger, Anne (Rene) Deschamps, Garth (Leah) Morstad, and Avis (Darrell) Dahl. Grandchildren include Kari (Kevin) Barter, Kristin (Robert) Wood, Tyler (Krista) Rittinger, Erin (Chris Baillie) Borshowa, Amanda ( Ian) Anderson, Adele (Sean) Haile, Nicole (Shaun) Quigley, Graham Dahl, Joleine Dahl, Raymond Morstad, Jessica Morstad. They have 10 great grandchildren. Also survived by brother Galen (Judy) Morstad, sisters Belva Hauka and Mona Nelson, sisters-in-law Marion Morstad, Magnhild (Al) Ferrari, and brothers-in-law Arnt (Donna) Peterson and Alex (Idelle) Peterson and numerous nieces and nephews. Alvin was born on October 4th 1919 to Gilbert and Amanda Morstad on the family homestead at Simmie SK. He received his education at Early School, Shaunavon and Balfour Tech in Regina. He enlisted in the Armed forces in 1942 and received honorable discharge in 1945. He married Valerie Mary Peterson on January 14th 1943, following which they moved to the family farm. He was active in the development of the Simmie community by being a member of the Credit Union, Wheat Pool and the Co-op board, the building crew for the Trinity Lutheran Church, Simmie Bible Camp and curling rink. With the impending closure of Early school, the family moved to Swift Current in 1965, and Al commuted to the farm well into his eighties. He became a member of St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church, Kiwanis club and Curling club. Al’s special talent and passion, besides farming and gardening, was having things to build and wood- working projects to create; all of which have become family treasures. Dad has left a legacy of love, kindness, respect and honesty and a family enriched with a sense of unity. He built a special location for the family to gather and they have inherited the love of this cabin, at Lac Pelletier. The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Palliser Regional Care Center for their compassion and tender care given to this wonderful, gentle family man. The Memorial service was held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Greg Kiel officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. For further information or to sign the family book of condolence visit parksidefuneralhome.com.
