Obituary of Fred Weinbender
Please share a memory of Fred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
WEINBENDER – Fred passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Fred was born to Anna Elizabeth and Frederick Johann Weinbender on the farm south of Chaplin on March 9, 1921, the 4th of 9 children. The family moved to a farm 5 miles south of Ernfold where Fred got his education in the Lavender School District. Fred met Amalia (Mollie) Wunsch while visiting her dad to get some information on how to build wind chargers. It was love at first sight and he and Mollie got married 3 years later on October 15, 1944. They farmed near Uren, SK for a few years but hail and drought made Fred realize they had to look elsewhere. Mollie got a job at the R.M. office at Chaplin and Fred worked for George Burroughs (GM Dealership). Later Fred worked at the Sodium Sulphate Plant. After 3 years he bought a store and post office at Calderbank. Then 3 years later he sold the store and Mollie and Fred moved to Donavon where Mollie was the R.M. administrator and Fred was the administrator for the Town of Delisle and the Delisle Hospital. He also was J.P. He built a garage and restaurant in Delisle where he and Mollie used to serve Christmas dinner to give his staff a holiday. After 10 years, they moved to Swift Current where Mollie became the R.M. administrator for the R.M. of Coulee. Fred worked for several businesses in Swift Current, then sold for Investors Group and then finally for Richardson’s Securities, now RBC from which he retired in 1983. Born with an acute ear for music, Fred played guitar and mandolin in the family Weinbender orchestra which played for dances and house parties for many years. He loved softball, golf and bowling and especially playing Keno at Las Vegas and Mesquite. He and Mollie made at least one trip a year by car for over 50 years to Indio, Desert Hot Springs, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Mesquite. Fred was predeceased by: parents Anna and Fred Weinbender; brothers Alex, Jack and Walter; sisters Ella, Martha and Annie; granddaughter Elizabeth Hope Sorensen; sister-in-law Anne, brothers-in-law Vernon Lindquist and Jack Schumann. Remembering him are his wife, Mollie; daughter Kathy (Alex Smith); grandsons Vincent and Michael Sorensen; great-grandsons Anthony, Alexander and Eric Sorensen; his sister Emma; his brother Bill (Michelle); his brother-in-law Bill Wunsch (Judy); sisters-in-law Hilda Weinbender; Martha Weinbender and Edith (Ivan Swanson); brother-in-laws Alex Leisle and Bill McQuistin and many nieces and nephews. At Fred’s request no funeral service will be held. A private interment service will be held at a later date. Thanks are extended to Dr. Kapusta, the staff at the Palliser, the many friends who sat with Fred during his last weeks and to George, Gail, Melanie and other nieces and nephews.
