Please share a memory of Fay to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
McLACHLAN – Fay Zella of Swift Current, SK., passed away peacefully at the Cypress Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 7th, 2014 at the age of 89. Fay was the second eldest child born to Ernest & Emma Saunders. She was born on October 16, 1924 in Herbert, Sk. After completing high school she went to Moose Jaw to Normal School for two months. This qualified her as a teacher. When she was teaching at Rush Valley School she met a handsome man by the name of Delbert McLachlan, who was driving a gravel truck in the area. He offered to drive her to her family in Herbert for the weekend. They had one date in June and then she went to B.C. to pick fruit for the summer. On her return they dated for about 3 1/2 months and were married on December 18th, 1945. The year after their marriage they built their home on the SE 34-15-10-W3. Farming was a family business working with Delbert’s parents, his uncle Willy, and cousin Don. After the elder McLachlans retired they carried on the business with Don & Lillian. They raised Charolais cross cows and primarily cereal crops. They put much time and effort into beautifying their yard and nurturing a shelterbelt of trees. They even grew various varieties of fruit trees. In 1989 they retired and moved to Swift Current where they enjoyed a new avenue of their life until Delbert’s death in 1996. They had one daughter, Dallas Marlene, who with her husband Al live in the house that Fay and Delbert had when they moved to Swift Current. When Marlene married Al Andrew they gained two step-grandsons, David and Doug and a number of years later a delightful little great-granddaughter, Ashley. Fay is survived by Marlene (Al), David (Sherri), Doug (Rose) and Ashley as well as nieces Judy Watt & Brenda (David) Phillips and nephew Lyle and a number of great nieces and nephews. Fay is also survived by others that were exceptionally important in her life, Don and Lillian McLachlan, Wayne (Linda) McLachlan, Wes McLachlan, Grant (Diane) McLachlan, Bev (James) Maxwell, and cousin Russell Saunders. In addition to her parents, Fay was predeceased by her two sisters and their husbands, Elfrieda (Andy) Hiebert and Maxine (Ralph) Merrick and brother Raymond Saunders as well as nephews Douglas and Gordon Merrick. Fay drew comfort from the scripture at Rev. 21:4 – And He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. A private family interment was held at the Herbert Cemetery on Friday, June 13th. In memory of Fay McLachlan, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 14th, 2014 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’ Witnesses, Swift Current, Sk., at 2 p.m. For further information or to sign the family book of condolences, visit our website at www.parksidefuneralhome.com.
