Obituary of James Martin Sluth
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
SLUTH – James Martin was born in 1931 in a farm house near Cantuar, Saskatchewan. He was the second child born to Muriel Naomi (Finlay) and Martin Christian Sluth. He spent his younger years assisting his father on the farm, delivering mail by horseback and attending school in a one room school house. At the age of twelve he moved to Swift Current where he attended Elmwood School and Swift Current Collegiate. Upon completing high school, Jim began work with the CPR where he did a variety of jobs but gained the most pride in engineering trains. One such train is now on display at the Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw. After fourteen years with the CPR and a growing family to support, he took a second job as a letter carrier. He carried both jobs for six years but stayed with Canada Post for twenty seven years when he finally retired. Never one to settle for just one job, Jim would often moonlight in construction and other odd jobs helping neighbours and those in need. Jim had a strong faith which he exemplified in his everyday life. His benevolent nature was shown in his desire to help those around him often those who were less capable or were in difficult times. Despite his desire to help, he was last to ask for support and remained wilfully independent until his final days. Jim’s greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. Left to remember his kind heart are Blake Sluth (Icla Baser-Sluth); Beth Eiswerth; and, Valerie Sluth (David Malloy) and grandchildren Shelby Sluth; and, Connor, Gaelan, Bronwen and Brigid Malloy. He is also survived by his younger sister Ida Smayda of Edmonton. He is predeceased by his older sister Marie Crews of Texas. “We will continue to make you proud Dad”. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. from Faith Evangelical Missionary Church in Swift Current.
