Obituary of Jim Anton Geiger

Please share a memory of Jim to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
GEIGER – Jim was born on June 22, 1932 to Peter and Eugena Geiger at the family farm in the Rosefield district. He passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Regina General Hospital. He was the youngest son born in a family of 10. Jim attended a one room school, the Shortgrass School and rode there by horseback every day. On October 4, 1954 he married Velma Nistor and worked on the family farm as well as the three quarters of land they purchased from Frank Kress which they later called home. They started a family having Harold, Doreen and Darleen. The farm grew through the years and became a farming and cattle operation. Jim loved branding time as it became a social event and horse shoe tournaments there were his favorite. During the winter months roads were poor with lots of snow and bitter cold but Jim would be out with neighbors blowing snow for the school bus to be able to get in and out, at times it seemed that it blew in quicker than they could blow it out. You could find Jim out there way past dark trying to get it all done. There was many times he would freeze his face later finding it pealing and being raw as there was no such thing as a warm tractor cab, but he would always say it will be “OK”. Jim loved to be on the land early “Have to get it in to get it off” and he loved watching a good crop grow and the spring calves getting fat and sassy. In 1997 the family farm was sold and he and Velma decided to semi retire on and acreage just east of Swift Current. Jim enjoyed his cattle that he brought with him for a few years and then decided it was time to slow down. He sold his livestock and devoted his time to tinkering around the shop and keeping track of his family and their activities. On October 23, 2001 life had taken a drastic change, Velma passed away. Jim married Susan Bennett on June 21, 2013 and lived on the acreage until June 2010 when he decided to move into a condo in Swift Current. Jim was always interested in what was going on in all of his families lives and was willing to help out or give advice if asked. A phone call or cookie or snack could always be found. He began going to the coffee shop on a regular basis where he very much enjoyed the friends he made and he spoke very highly of them to his family. In his last day in the hospital as his health was failing he very much enjoyed visits from his coffee friends and family. Jim leaves to morn his family: Harold and Lois Geiger; Darleen Geiger and Gerry Graham; Doreen and Charles Lamb; Susan Geiger; grandchildren Kyreon, Rylan and Jelaine Geiger, Irvin and Mylee Lamb; two sisters, Viola and Leo Laturnus, Elaine McNabb and numerous nieces and nephews. We will miss you dearly and love you always! Rest in Peace. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Christ The Redeemer Roman Catholic Church with Father Richard Jasiak MSF officiating. Memorial donations in memory of Jim can be made to Stars Air Ambulance 1441 Aviation Park NE Box 570 Calgary, AB T2E 8M7.
