Obituary of Ruth Joy Schellenberg

Please share a memory of Ruth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
SCHELLENBERG – Ruth Joy was born November 24, 1929 on a farm north of Gouldtown. She was the oldest child of John and Nettie Schellenberg. In 1930 the Schellenberg’s settled on a farm south of Riverhurst. George was born in 1933. This was the ‘dirty thirties” and farming was hard. The family moved back to Gouldtown, ½ mile south of the Schellenberg grandparents. Ruth began her education at the River Dell School when she was seven years old. Four miles was a long trip to school; so we were taken by sleigh in winter and car in summer. School life was enjoyable for the most part. Preparing for Christmas concerts in December and end of year picnics were highlights. She could have quit school in November when she turned 15 but she continued till June and completed her grade eight. Her sister, Della was born in 1940 and a brother Blaine in 1950. This completed the family. Blaine passed away in 1967 which was traumatic for the family. She remained at home on the farm, helping with housework and gardening. She did beautiful embroidery as a pastime. She really enjoyed Gouldtown Homecoming when people returned that she remembered from years ago. In 1990 Ruth and her parents moved to the low rentals in Herbert. Her dad passed away in 1994 and Ruth took care of her mother who had several strokes. Ruth’s mother passed away in 1998. Ruth decided she would stay by herself in the unit. She actually did very well. In 2013 she was transferred to the Herbert Heritage Manor. She settled in very well and enjoyed the company of friends she made there. On January 19, 2018 she was admitted to the hospital. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 7, at 6:00 a.m. A funeral service was held on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Living Faith Fellowship Church with Reverend Abe Harder officiating. She was laid to rest at the Gouldtown Cemetery. The ushers were Don Fast and Randall Fast and pallbearers were: Brain Funk, Wayne Funk, Ron Funk, Steve LaPointe, Karen Tillie and Connie Funk.
