Nobody matched Mr. Weiner when it came to going the extra mile for his students. I was in his first German class at the Comp–45+ years later I can still sing snatches of “Die Gedanken Sind Frei” in German. He had a powerful impact on many young lives.

Thanks to Mr. Weiner for sharing so much of himself with his students. He exemplified a true gift of teaching by being passionate about sharing knowledge but also about caring for his students. Butterscotch candies always remind me of German class as encouraged us through games to learn the language and culture he loved. My condolences to you. Mr. Weiner’s legacy lives on through his students, family, and friends.

Herr Weiner was one of those truly special teachers. His joy for life was contagious. I had the privilege of learning Geman from him and going on the trip to Gemany in 1977. He made learning fun and interesting and somehow taught us about life along with the school lessons. I have remembered him often over the years. His life made an impact on so many people and he will be missed.

I never had Gunter for Chem or German, but he as well as Helma became like second parents to me. He was also my main email buddy. He would forward all of my emails to former teachers from the comp. The Weiner household was like a second home to me. I will miss his talks and Bev and I miss the Opera visits.

Herr Weiner taught me German as well. His love for Germany and its culture was strong. Timing was not right for me to go to Germany with the student trips, but my dream trip was always to see Herr Weiner’s Germany. My husband and I did that this July. Our first stop was in Koln to see the cathedral. I thought of Herr Weiner often during our trip; in fact, it was quite an emotional time for me and so rewarding. I will always remember Herr Weiner-he had a great impact on my life.

I only knew Herr Weiner briefly in the 70’s but he made a lasting impression. No matter how rudimentary our German if we were taking his class and showed up socially at his home we must all communicate in German. I’m sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with his family.

So many happy memories flood my mind when I think of Mr Weiner, who taught me both German and chemistry. singing in class, eating butter cream icing when I think we were baking tortes at your home to sell at a fundraiser for that 1974 class trip. I was one of the lucky ones who went on it. Such a wonderful teacher and human being! May your many happy memories comfort you at this time.

Gunter was a colleague at the Comp when I started teaching in 1974. He was a true renaissance man. Chatting about music , theatre , chemistry, history he lived them all. His wit was unparalleled I feel so lucky to have worked Gunter. To Helma and family and dear friends I know your loss is great but so are the memories of life lived with Gunter. I remember delivering rye bread from Saskatoon to Gunter’s door. He said ,” thanks Bonnie, now we can finally stop eating cake .”

Herr Weiner was my (Diedre) German teacher in ’87 and ’88 but he was already a legacy in our home before that as my older siblings talked of him with high regard before I reached High School. I saw him in Swift the last time I was there a year ago and almost stopped to say hi but I didn’t think he’d remember me. Now I wish I had. He was a wonderful man and one of my favorite teachers. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Gunter Weiner profoundly and positively affected my life. As a young teenager, I had many conversations with him about the Holocaust, World War II and what it means to be human. Could one ask for greater depth and sensitivity in a person than he displayed towards me. As a teacher, as a man and as a human being, I have always held him in my heart with greatest respect and appreciation and will continue to do so. To the family and friends, my warmest sympathies on your loss.
