Obituary of Melvin & jean Olson

OLSON – Melvin and Jean Melvin Olson, age 97, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018, and Jean (Miller) Olson, age 87, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2018. They both passed away peacefully with family by their sides at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Melvin was born in Swift Current on September 12, 1920, and Jean was born on December 16, 1930, also in Swift Current. Melvin and Jean are survived by their sons Barry (wife Edith), and Trent (wife Lana), five grandchildren (Iain, Kyla, Alastair, David, and Christina), and two great grandchildren (Rhedyn and Nash). Melvin is also survived by sister June Bulin and brother Keith Olson, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Jean was also survived by cousins, nephews, nieces in Canada, and several cousins in Scotland. Melvin was predeceased by seven sisters and three brothers, and Jean was predeceased by one brother. Melvin spent most of his life on the family farm in the Wymark area, and Jean grew up and then worked a short time in Swift Current. Melvin and Jean were married on June 2, 1951, and lived in Swift Current for a few years. They moved to the Olson family farm in 1954, and they took over the farm operation. They raised two sons and farmed for 61 years. In 2015, the farmland was rented, but they remained on the home quarter. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling, and baseball during his many years. Jean enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking, curling, golf, and family and friends. In their honour, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The funeral for both will be held at Parkside Memorial Funeral Home in Swift Current on January 27, 2018 starting at 2:00 p.m., followed by an informal reception at the Eagles Hall.
