Obituary of Herman Harry Cornelson

CORNELSON – Herman Harry (1926-2017) passed away, with his family by his side, on December 24, 2017 at the Herbert Integrated Health Facility at the age of 91 years. Herman was born on April 23, 1926 at the family homestead near Beaver Flat, Saskatchewan, the 8th of 11 children. Herman is survived by his loving wife Marjorie, his sons Allan (Marcia) and Mark (Barb); his grandchildren Brett (Kelly), Trisha (Brian), Todd (Carrie), Nicole, Randi (Brody) and Dakota; his great grandchildren Jackson, Emilie, Sydney, Elliot, Rachel, Maielle and Violet; step-children Paul (Sarah) Thibault, Jean (Brad) Halstead, John (Delia) Thibault and Mary Ann Thibault; one brother Wilf (Jean) and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and their families. Herman was looking forward to having another great granddaughter (Scarlett) in January of 2018. Herman was predeceased by brother George, and sisters Rosa, Helen, Clara Funk, Luella Schindel, Marcella Schmor, Anne Cavanagh, Doris Monck and Hilda Curtis. Herman married Elizabeth (Betty) Burkart on August 21, 1952. They raised two sons Allan and Mark. Betty passed away on February 18, 2004. Herman married Marj Thibault on August 27, 2005. Both being widowed, they enjoyed companionship and doing things together such as touring around and going out for coffee and meals, etc.. Growing up with using horses for farming developed an interest in horses and rodeo that never faded. His interest was shared by his brothers George and Wilf and also his numerous cousins Norman, Harry, Wes, Jake, Ernie -when they were together -you knew the main topic of conversation. Herman worked most of his life for Provincial Community Pastures, including Beechy, the Matador and his long term and retirement at Valjean pasture. He was involved with 4-H, Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Association, Agribition, Saskatchewan Quarter Horse Association, etc. He served as President and Director on most and even editor for some. Herman travelled to England, Mexico, Germany and Italy promoting Quarter horses. He took pride in raising, training and showing his horses and entering numerous competitions. He won hundreds of trophies, ribbons and prizes. In later years, Herman wrote and published four books, with all the pictures of horses being taken – photography being another interest. He loved writing books to share his stories about the cowboy way of life. Herman took great pride in teaching each of his grandchildren how to ride a horse, and there are many pictures to prove that. He could have a saddle on a horse in seconds if anyone showed a desire to ride a horse! Even in his later years, he attended the Frontier Days rodeo, Herbert Stampede and never missed watching the Calgary Stampede on the television. There was a deep sadness when he didn’t own a horse anymore. The funeral was celebrated at Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Church with Reverend Msgr.
