Please share a memory of Beulah to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
HUSS, Beulah Joyce (Olsen) passed away at the Cypress Regional Hospital on November 3, 2017 surrounded by her family. Beulah was born on April 21, 1932 to Ole and Alice Olsen at the family farm in Simmie, Sask. She was the 4th eldest of 6 children. Beulah was dearly loved and is survived by her 6 children. Wendell (Di) Huss and his children Cody, and James, Randy Huss and his child Logan, Twila (Ward) Schultz and their children Keon, Karma and Kelly, Lexie Wiebe and her children Amaisha and Dylan; Cindy (Ed) Slusar and their children Bobbi-Jo, Coe and Levi; Shelley (Larry) Johnston and their children Hayden, Carter and Kennedi. As well as 10 great granddaughters, 1 great grandson and 2 more on the way, 2 sisters Dolores Saaler, Elaine Gee and 1 brother Orville Olsen. She is predeceased by son-in-law Leonard Wiebe, special friend Eddie Modien and 2 sisters Alvina Kantrud, and Lorraine Modien. Beulah grew up at the family farm in Simmie, then attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and became a school teacher. Later she worked in retail as a clerk and book keeper until her retirement at age 65. Beulah raised her 6 children in the little flat roofed house on the hill and there she resided until a few years ago when she moved into Golden West Manor. Even though she had a tiny house she always made room for those that had nowhere to go, whether it was just a homemade meal or a place to sleep. She was a humble woman of very few words and never said anything bad about anyone. Beulah never had a car so she walked everywhere whether it was to pay bills, Doctor appointments or to the grocery store shopping for 6 kids. I don’t think there was a sport that Beulah didn’t enjoy. She was her grandchildren’s biggest fan whether it was at the rink, at the ball diamond, gymnastics, judo or dance. She was a big fan of the Bronco’s, SK Roughriders and Swift Current 57’s. There was no end to her talents; she was a terrific dancer, hair dresser (she was always giving someone a perm or a color), seamstress (whether it was making a wedding gown or patching ripped out knees on a pair of jeans), she could fix anything with a hammer and nails or just a little duct tape and crazy glue. It wasn’t surprising to stop in at her house and find her in her kitchen with her vacuum cleaner apart trying to fix the retractable cord. She wasn’t bad with a saw, hammer and nails either. She built a set of toddler bunk beds for Cindy & Shelley, and she ripped out her front steps and built a new set. She didn’t believe in throwing anything away that could be fixed. She loved to bake and all of our childhood friends loved the cookies and cakes that came out of her oven. About 30 years ago she started a little tradition every Sunday when she would make her famous cinnamon buns. This tradition remains today but the last few years her daughters would take turns hosting Sunday brunch. She would never say no to an adventure, whether it was flying to Germany to see Bobbi Jo play hockey, snorkeling at Karma and Jeff’s wedding in the Dominican (and she doesn’t know how to swim) or spend an afternoon on the beach at the landing. During the last few years of her residency at Golden West she enjoyed the many activities including, exercise class, puzzling, coffee time and playing cards every evening with her new friends. Beulah had an amazing way of turning hardships into positive memories and never complained about a tough life. Many people would say how lucky she was to have such caring kids but really we were the “lucky” ones. There was never a shortage of laughs and love and she will be so dearly missed. Sunday’s will never be the same without her. Memorial donations can be made to Dories House or The Centre.
