In Loving Memory of Alvin Victor Wagner

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alvin Victor Wagner, who passed away at his home on July 17, 2026, at the age of 90.

Alvin was predeceased by his loving wife, Arlene; Colleen Gershon; his son, Terry; his stepson, Donny Chalk; his parents, Clem and Erica Wagner; and his siblings, Ronald Wagner, Frank Wagner (Norma), and Hilde Wagner.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sons Rory (Fern), grandchildren Dale and Lane; Gerald (Abi) Ursa; Murray (Leanne) and grandson Dalton (Laticia); stepson Fred (Denise), grandson William, great-grandsons Sterling and Kohen; daughter-in-law Tracey; granddaughters Hailey (Juan), with great­grandchildren Emilia and Marco, and granddaughter Keeley (Thomas); along with many extended family members, friends, and all whose lives were enriched by just knowing him.

Alvin was born on November 13, 1935, in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, where he grew up on the family farm. Those early years instilled in him a strong work ethic and a lifelong love of farming and tractors. At the age of 20, Alvin began his career with SaskPower, where he remained a dedicated employee until his retirement at the age of 51. In his early years Alvin took part in curling, ball and other sports, and since then has always loved just watching sports too. His boys tell of the countless miles he and Arlene travelled to support them in anything they took part in from school sports such as track and volleyball to baseball, slo-pitch and hockey.

Old Country Classic music was another love of Alvin's. There was a calmness he had when he listened to the music he grew up with, like songs by Freddie Hart, Carol Baker, Dolly Parton and others.

Following retirement, Alvin spent many evenings with Arlene in their beautiful backyard. They would prepare a BBQ supper, and Alvin would pour an Amber Rum and Coke; then they would often talk until dusk, spending the evening beside a campfire. Other times he would break out a musical instrument near the end of the night. The two of them also shared a special love for children and animals. Their beloved Collie, Sandy, was truly part of the family. Treating her with endless love and affection led Sandy to believe that she was every bit as human as the rest of the family.

Alvin was passionate about his hobby, collecting tractors-anything tractors such as models, pictures, and calendars. This made Christmas gifts easy to choose, as long as there were plenty of scratch tickets in his stocking and his traditional cherry whisky and Coke to enjoy before Christmas breakfast.

Alvin became a familiar face, known and well loved by the staff at various local restaurants he frequented throughout the year, regardless of the weather. He built lasting friendships with many of the waitresses, who often showed their appreciation with thoughtful Christmas gifts. The staff at Elmwood Grocery Store also held a special place in his heart, greeting him warmly, opening doors for him, and always making him feel welcome during his regular visits to purchase his Lotto tickets.

He especially looked forward to his Friday morning breakfasts with the "Big Guys," as well as his daily breakfast outings-except Mondays, which were reserved for laundry day-his "day off.” After all his boys had built lives and families of their own, and following Arlene’s passing, Alvin remained closely connected with each of them through regular phone calls that bridged any distance. Murray, who lived nearby, was always there to take care of him, and as Alvin grew older, Murray spent even more time with him. Rory made multiple trips to Swift Current from his home in Olds, Alberta, to help his dad and visit, while Gerald made the long trip from his home in British Columbia whenever he possibly could. Regardless of distance, each of his boys remained only a phone call away.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Parkside Memorial Funeral Home at 69 Fourth Avenue N.E., Swift Current, Saskatchewan, at 2:00 p.m.

Alvin will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Arlene, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Highway 4 and Hillcrest Drive East, Swift Current.

In memory of Alvin, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Royal Canadian Legion.

Alvin will be remembered for his work ethic, his devotion to family, his love of tractors, his steadfast routines, and the quiet kindness that touched so many lives. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
