MURCHIE – Douglas (Doug) N. Murchie passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on
Thursday, December 11, 2025. Doug was born in Pennant, SK on July 31, 1935. Doug will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 13 years, Karen Messer and her three children and six grandchildren, by his daughters Kathryn (Kathy), and Sandra (spouse Brett), grand-daughters Claire and Elizabeth and many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his beloved first wife Elaine, his son James (Jim), his brother Ron, and his parents Donald and Maplet (nee Watson). Having lost his first love, Elaine far too early in life, Doug was blessed to meet and marry the second love of his life, Karen, whose family welcomed him into their hearts. Doug started farming as a young man, in and around Success, SK, until his retirement in 1996. While his parents’ home in Success was maintained and used for many years, Doug and Elaine made their permanent home in Swift Current. Doug was an avid curler, beginning playing in high school and as a spectator until his last days. Doug was also active on the organizational side of the game. He managed the Swift Current Curling Club for many years and held a number of positions, including President, with the Saskatchewan Curling Association as well as heading local, provincial and national curling championships. For his work and dedication, Doug received many curling awards and accolades. Doug’s love of ball was lifelong, having played in his youth, he became an ardent Blue Jays fan, including thoroughly enjoying the Jays World Series run this past fall. In retirement, Doug remained very active. He was able to focus more on his golf game and most weekdays in the summer, Doug could be found at the Chinook Golf Course, with his golf pals. In recent years, Doug enjoyed square dancing and bowling. Of course, being a true Saskatchewanian, Doug cheered the Riders onto the 2025 Grey Cup. Doug’s other big recreational love was hunting. The annual Abbey goose hunt was a tradition that forged lasting friendships with hunters from across Canada that continue to this day.
Doug’s life will be celebrated at First United Church, Swift Current on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 2:00pm. Interment to follow.
