Mildred Thomas Obituary

Mildred Electa Thomas (née Greer), aged 97, passed away peacefully in the kind and attentive surroundings of the Cabri Prairie Health Care Center on Dec. 6, 2025. A lifelong resident of Cabri and a child of pioneer parents, she was born at a time when life’s necessities were scarce and families relied on grit, resourcefulness, and one another.

The youngest of five children, Mildred grew up with four older brothers who filled the house with energy and stories. With so many hungry mouths to feed and food in short supply, she often recalled evenings at the supper table when her mother would quietly say she “wasn’t hungry” — a gesture Mildred later understood as her mother’s way of ensuring the children had enough to eat. That simple act of sacrifice shaped Mildred’s own values for the rest of her life.

Encouraged by her mother to pursue as much education as possible, Mildred attended the one-room schoolhouse called Gaverelle. She carried a lifelong appreciation for learning, practicality, and doing things properly the first time.

As a young woman, Mildred was swept off her feet by a young man who lived just four miles away, Jack Thomas. They eloped and married in Malta, Montana. Following their honeymoon in Niagara Falls, Ontario, the couple returned to the Gaverelle district to begin their life together. They took over the Thomas family farm and devoted themselves to raising their three children and building a life rooted in family, hard work, and community.

First and foremost a homemaker and farmer’s wife — a role now recognized as nothing short of a highly skilled farmhand, household manager, and expert in conflict resolution — Mildred was also an entrepreneur long before the word became fashionable. She sold eggs and chickens to a loyal group of customers. As an accomplished seamstress, she did custom sewing and used leftover fabric to create Barbie doll outfits, selling them at the Cabri Co-op store. Later, she became a Tri-Chem dealer and then a Raleigh’s dealer, always finding practical ways to contribute to the family’s livelihood through her creativity and determination.

Mildred was a lifelong member of the Gaverelle Ladies Club, formed during the Second World War to make quilts for soldiers overseas. The club continued the tradition after the war and made a quilt each year to be raffled off at their annual tea. Quilting remained one of her greatest pleasures. She hand-stitched countless quilts for family, friends, and customers, each one a gift of patience and love. A note found with one quilt recorded 800 hours of hand-quilting — work that earned her $250, or 31 cents per hour. Though the small amounts of money she earned contributed to the family income, she quilted more to bring warmth and beauty to those around her with her attention to detail. More than one quilt brought home red ribbons from the Swift Current Fair Days.

Her greatest pride was her family. She leaves behind her three children, nine grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren — each one a thread in the legacy she stitched together with devotion, patience, hard work, and unwavering love. Her family was her life’s work and her greatest joy. Mildred followed their journeys with genuine interest and quiet pride, her gentle smile saying everything without needing many words.

Mildred was predeceased by her parents, Cora (Griffin) and Bruce Greer, and four brothers: Earl, Murray, Norman, and Gordon. She is survived by her children: Roy (Evelyn), Bert, and Winona; grandchildren (in order of birth): Gail, Blaine, Owen, Tracy, Johnathan, Andrew, Brandy, and Kane; and great-grandchildren: Madison, Kajun, Kane, Georgia, James, Noah, Hailey, Matthew, Lucas, Joel, Emma, Lucy, Alexander, and Sadie.

One of Mildred’s most familiar phrases, spoken with a small nod and a steady expression, was “I’m okay.” She said it even when she wasn’t — not out of denial, but out of a lifelong instinct to spare others worry, much like her own mother had done for her children decades earlier.

In her later years, dementia gradually stole pieces of her personality, softening some edges and blurring others. Yet even through the fog of the disease, Mildred was still there — unmistakable and shining through in small, unexpected moments.

Mildred’s life was shaped by simplicity, hard work, and the steady kind of love that lasts long after a person is gone.
