Lloyd Alexander Gammel

September 20, 1940 – July 21, 2025

While our hearts are heavy with loss, we also recognize that we are here because of the incredible life Lloyd lived—a life filled with love, hard work, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and the land he so dearly cherished.

Lloyd was born on September 20, 1940, in Herbert, Saskatchewan, to August and Rosie Gammel. Lloyd had 4 siblings: Don, Les, Rose, and Joyce. He was raised on a farm just north of Morse, where he learned the value of hard work and the deep connection to the land that would guide him throughout his life. From an early age, he showed the resilience and determination that would become his trademarks. He often shared stories about his school days—riding to a one-room schoolhouse with a horse and buggy, walking uphill both ways, and wearing barb-wired shoes (yes grandpa, we believe you). But those early years laid the foundation for the man he would become: humble, dedicated, a prankster at heart, and always ready to face any challenge.

It was in the small town of Morse, while he was finishing school, that Lloyd’s journey took another pivotal turn when, at the age of 18, he met the love of his life, Myrna Robinson from Ernfold. Their love story began in their youth and lasted through a lifetime of adventures, challenges, and triumphs. They were married in 1960, and together they embarked on a 49-year-long journey of mixed farming on Grampa Webber’s farm. Their son Tim was born in 1961 and Pat was born in 1962 (you do the math), two bundles of energy that filled their lives with excitement, laughter, and, yes, a few grey hairs along the way. Lloyd loved nothing more than having his family by his side, whether it was moving cattle, hauling grain, picking bales, or enjoying meals together in the fields—the farm was more than a place to work—it was a place where bonds were built, memories were made, and the strength of family was felt in every corner of the land.

Grandpa’s legacy as a father was rich, and he found great joy in seeing his family grow over the years. His granddaughters, Candace, Codi, Montana, and myself enjoyed many sleepovers at the farm helping grama in the kitchen and garden, helping grandpa in the shop, hauling grain, and riding quads. If something was broken, grandpa could fix it. Later on, Tim’s second set of kids, Garrett and Sawyer, and Deana’s son Zack, joined the family with grandpa’s heart swelling with love. He loved playing with his grandkids, sharing those special moments that only grandparents can truly appreciate.

Beyond his family, Lloyd had a deep love for his community. He was always ready to lend a hand, whether it was through his many years of volunteering with the Boy Scouts, serving on school boards, or dedicating time to local projects in Morse and Herbert. He was a fixture at town events, a leader on local boards, and an active participant in sports like baseball, hockey, and curling. Lloyd loved hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling with his wife and boys. And of course, he enjoyed the simpler pleasures of life, like sitting down with a cup of coffee and his newspaper, always ready to share the news of the day and engage in a good conversation.

In 2007, Lloyd and Myrna retired to Herbert, where they continued to stay involved in their community and welcomed new generations of family. Codi’s son Zayne, Candace’s boys Liam and Gunnar, and Caitlin’s sons Everett and Parker made family gatherings so much more fun (and loud). His bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren only deepened in those years, and he was always there to share his wisdom, his time, and his love. Even in his later years, Grandpa never stopped giving to those around him.

Today, as we mourn Lloyd's passing, we also celebrate his life. Lloyd taught us all so much about resilience, about the importance of family, and about the value of hard work and community. His love for his wife Myrna was unwavering, and his pride in his children and grandchildren was boundless. He has left an undeniable mark on all of us, and while we will miss him dearly, we know that his legacy lives on in each of us.

Lloyd is predeceased by his son, Tim, and his siblings Les, Don, and Rose. He leaves behind his beloved wife Myrna, his son Pat, daughter-in-laws Joyce and Darcy, niece Deana, all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

As we say goodbye, we remember Lloyd not just for the years he lived, but for the lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. May we carry forward the lessons he taught us: to cherish family, to value hard work, and to always find joy in the small things—like a cup of coffee, a good prank, or the feeling of the land beneath our feet.

Rest in peace, Grandpa, you will never be forgotten.

The Memorial Service to honour his life will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Parkside Memorial Funeral Home with Chaplain Bob Cappelle officiating. The interment will take place following the service at the Morse Cemetery and reception to follow at the family house.
