Kay Tsougrianis Obituary

In Loving Memory of Kay Tsougrianis

May 15, 1930 – June 1, 2025

With heartfelt sorrow, the family of Kay Tsougrianis announces her peaceful passing on June 1, 2025, at the age of 95.

Kay was born on May 15, 1930, in the mountain village of Fountoma, Arkadia, Greece—a place where strong hands and resilient hearts shaped life on the land. The daughter of George and Maria Perdicaris, Kay was raised with her siblings Jim, Nick, John, Chris, Dina, and Anne, in a household rooted in hard work and deep family bonds. Her early years were marked by both the joys of close-knit rural life and the profound hardships of war, having lived through the traumatic German invasion of Greece during World War II.

After the war, Kay moved to Athens where she worked as a housekeeper for relatives. There she learned the finer points of running a home—cooking traditional dishes, baking sweets, and even following the latest fashion trends. But it was in returning to her hometown that her next chapter began. On October 16, 1955, she married Louis Tsougrianis. Together, they welcomed their first son, Nick, in 1956 and made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada the following year.

Arriving in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1957, Kay and Louis began a new life filled with challenges, hope, and perseverance. They lived at 2150 McIntyre Street, a home that would become a haven for many Greek immigrants in the years to come. Kay worked in restaurants, learned a new language, and raised her young son while adjusting to a new country.

In 1962, an opportunity brought the family to Swift Current to operate the Healy Hotel Restaurant. With the help of family—including Louis’s brother Gus, who they brought from Greece—the restaurant thrived. Their success led to the purchase of the Modern Cafe in 1966, which they renovated and operated with other family members, including Gus and George Tsougrianis.

The Modern Cafe became more than just a restaurant—it was a home and a launching pad for countless relatives building their lives in Canada. Kay and Louis lived upstairs in a suite above the cafe, where up to five boarding rooms housed newly arrived family members. Kay was the heart of that household—cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and hosting large Sunday dinners where Greek food, laughter, and love filled the room.

In 1967, Kay and Louis welcomed their second son, George. Even with a young child and the demands of the restaurant, Kay remained the steady hand in the kitchen and the soul of the operation. They continued to run the Modern Cafe until their retirement in 1987, after which the business was sold to the Doulias family.

In retirement, Kay embraced the simple joys of life—tending to her garden, going on drives with Louis, volunteering at the Swift Current Union Hospital, and remaining an active member of the Greek Orthodox community. Her grandchildren knew her as Yiayia, the loving grandmother who always had a table full of homemade Greek dishes and desserts waiting for them. Her heritage was something she carried with pride and shared with generosity.

After Louis passed away in 2004, Kay was lovingly cared for by George and his wife Carol until she moved to the Meadows nursing home, where she spent her later years surrounded by compassion and kindness.

Kay is survived by her sons George (Carol) Tsougrianis and Nick Tsougrianis; her grandchildren Alexandra Bosch, Elias Tsougrianis, and Sophia Tsougrianis; and her great-grandson Michael Bosch. She is also survived by her sister Anne Gardikiotis and many cherished nieces, nephews, and their children.

The family extends deep gratitude to the staff at the Meadows for their care over the past years, and to the friends and family who visited Kay—Yiayia, Thea—offering meals, memories, comfort, and love.

Funeral services will be held at the Lifegiving Font Greek Orthodox Church in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meadows Auxiliary (Meadows Nursing Home, Swift Current, 491 Curry Cres. Swift Current, SK. S9H 4S3 / 1-306-773-7537).
