Obituary of Agnes Friesen
FRIESEN – Agnes “Nettie” on January 29th, 2025 Agnes (Nettie) Friesen, from Beechy Saskatchewan, passed away at the age of 92 in the Dinsmore Health Care Centre. She is survived by her son Neil (Deb) Friesen of Mossleigh AB, daughter Kathy (Bill) Blain of Water Valley AB, son Joe (Natalie) Friesen of Hanna AB, daughter Pauline (Darrin) Watson of Asquith SK, son Les (Reizah) Friesen of Dinsmore SK, and daughter-in-law Tina Friesen. Her grandchildren Rebecca Blain, Travis (Lena) Blain, Callie (Colin) Beaudoin, Mackenzie Friesen, Stephanie (Dustin) Wiebe, Troy Watson, Samuel Friesen, Abigail Friesen, and great grandchildren Daniel Wiebe and Harper Wiebe. She is predeceased by her husband Nicholas K. Friesen, her two brothers John Dyck and Abe Dyck, and parents George and Aganeta Dyck.
Nettie was born on October 9, 1932, on her family’s homestead in the rolling hills near Glen Kerr, Saskatchewan. There were ten feet high snow drifts in their yard, packed hard by the wind, from an early snow storm which had left behind a significant amount of snow. Her father went by horse and sleigh four and a half miles through the deep snow to bring the midwife to help with the birthing. By February the snow had all melted away and people took advantage of the early drying of the land to harrow their fields. In the summer of 1933, when Nettie was just starting to walk, the dust storms began. The years that followed were challenging years for everyone. Nettie grew up tough and resilient, working hard to help her family put food on the table and beat the elements that constantly tried to wear them down. Her tremendous work ethic and resourcefulness followed her throughout her life. Whatever she put her hand to was done in earnest, and she always endeavored to do her best.
Nettie found work at different ranches and farms on the Saskatchewan prairie until she met and married Nicholas K. Friesen from the Beaver Flat area. After marrying in 1958, Nick and Nettie raised five children. They lived in several locations, from the Central Butte, Beaver Flat, Glen Kerr, Leinan, Beechy and Demaine areas, including East Camp at the Matador community pasture for a number of years. Nettie took great care of her family and home wherever they lived, growing huge gardens, sewing a lot of clothing, carding her own wool for making warm quilts, and always brightening her garden and yard with colorful perennial and annual flowers. Their cold room was well stocked come fall with all her canning and produce from her gardens. Nettie resided in Beechy for forty years till health issues brought her into the Dinsmore Health Care Centre in 2019.
Nettie was a strong independent woman who loved her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren dearly and will be greatly missed. But we rejoice in knowing that she is now free of her wheelchair, walking in the beauty and splendor of heaven with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Because she chose to believe in God and make her peace with Him by asking Jesus into her life, God has given her a heavenly home to be with Him forever in His love and care.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, February 15th, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the Parkside Funeral Home at 69 - 4th Avenue North East, Swift Current, Saskatchewan, with a time of refreshments to follow. A private immediate family interment was held earlier at the Friesen Cemetery east of Stewart Valley.
